Orca Health with a focus on Strandings and Rescue Strategies

February 16 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

You have to consult with the event organizer:

Hosted by: Manuel Arbelo, Antonio Fernández, Carolina Fernández-Maldonado (seashore.ef@gmail.com ), Joanne Halliday, Ingrid Visser (ingrid@orca.org.nz)

This workshop on orca health will focus on techniques and protocols associated with live and dead strandings including rescue approaches, welfare and necropsies.

Orca strandings often attract significant public attention, whether they are due to illness, environmental stressors, interactions with human activities, failed foraging attempts or other reasons. Live strandings often culminate in rescue efforts. This workshop will address, knowledge gaps in appropriate species-specific rescue techniques and in our understanding of the medicine, pathology and broader health implications for this species.

Discussions will be based primarily on information that has been, or can be, obtained from strandings data. It will prioritise refining species- and situation-specific protocols with respect to rescue attempts and necropsies. Participants will explore case studies of single and mass strandings, with attendees encouraged to contribute data, photos and other materials. Suitable examples will be incorporated into the program to enrich discussions including reviewing current findings on toxicology and environmental stressors.

The goal is to foster collaboration among participants by pooling knowledge and experiences. The expected workshop outcomes are to:

  • identify research gaps and provide approaches to address these;
  • and progress response strategies based on existing international cetacean protocols, including the development of orca-specific Rescue and Necropsy Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for management authorities, rescue teams and other stakeholders.
